Our Outside the Box program provides hands-on educational activities, and opportunities to explore innovative fields to middle school youth experiencing systemic barriers to achievement or participation. These youth learn design thinking and maker skills, empowering them to use creative problem solving in life and in imagining their futures.
Outside the Box was created by Rachel Wagner and Tiersa Wodash. It began as program of Ecolibrium3 in 2019, bringing workshops and take-home kits to youth in the area. In the fall of 2021, it became a program of the Duluth Folk School and we are excited to continue offering these opportunities to youth throughout our community.
We offer workshops at the Duluth Folk School, and we partner with local youth agencies or organizations to provide outreach at other sites. Previous activities have included a variety of take-home project kits, renewable energy workshops, chalk murals, moving mobiles, craft stick lamps, building a box city, and there is much more to come. You can find upcoming events on our Calendar, or if you’d like us to bring an activity to your site, connect with Erika.
