Footstool for Caning

This is the footstool you will be caning

In this class, you will learn to weave cane onto a footstool using the seven step hand caning method (see photo). All materials are included in the price of registration, including stool, cane, and other materials required to complete your stool.

You will complete a hand caned stool to bring home, and you will then have the skills to continue caning on your own!

Age

Ages 12 to adult. Younger students may want to work together with an adult partner on a single footstool. Each person attending must register separately.

You Should Bring

  • bucket
  • small sponge
  • scissors or utility knife

Once your footstool is completed, if you plan to bring an additional chair, stool or canoe seat, it must have holes around the opening. Clear away any old cane before class and be sure that the rest of your piece is sturdy.

Class will meet…

We will meet three times, on Monday nights from 6pm to 9pm:

  • Tuesday, January 24, 2017, 6p – 9p
  • Tuesday, January 31, 2017, 6p – 9p
  • Tuesday, February 7, 2017, 6p – 9p

At each class, you will receive instruction to build on the previous class, and materials for that day. Between classes, you will be expected to make some progress on your stool. Once your footstool is completed, you can bring your own chair, canoe seat, or other piece to begin work on. NOTE: this method of caning requires holes for weaving (see photos below). If you plan to bring an additional chair, stool or canoe seat, it must have holes or this method will not work:

This is an example of the bottom of a caned canoe seat that has holes (this WOULD work for this class, after your stool is complete):

This is an example of the top of a caned canoe seat that does not have holes (this WOULD NOT work for this class, unless new holes were drilled):

Will there be any caning classes this year (2019 or 2020)? If not, do you know of anyone who would cane a chair seat for me?
