During this class, you will learn how to successfully start vegetable and flower seeds indoors using a simple, effective setup that works well in our northern climate. You’ll discover when to start different crops, how to choose the right soil and containers, and how to manage light, warmth, and moisture to grow sturdy, healthy seedlings. We’ll walk step-by-step through the process so you understand not just what to do, but why it works.

You will get hands-on experience sowing seeds, setting up trays, and using grow mats and full-spectrum lights to create ideal growing conditions. By the end of class, you’ll feel confident caring for your seedlings at home and troubleshooting common beginner challenges.

All materials are provided, and you will take home your grow mat, seed trays, and grow light so you can continue growing right away. No prior experience is necessary — just bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Registration Includes

Students will leave with a complete seed-starting setup, including a grow mat, seed trays, and a full-spectrum grow light system ($50 value). You will also take home the seeds you plant during class and the knowledge needed to care for them confidently. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have both the tools and the practical skills to continue growing successfully at home.

What goes into our class pricing? As a local nonprofit, Duluth Folk School is committed to supporting both our instructors and community. We want to compensate our instructors fairly, keep class sizes small, and keep our doors open—while also keeping prices as low as we can.

Thank you for participating in our local handcraft and education economy! Together, we help keep Duluth a fun and vibrant place.

Hello – wondering if 3 from one family can attend and the 2nd/3rd person pay less because they will not be bringing home additional growing kits? Hoping to pay one full registration and then 2 half registrations for my children or something like that? We would be sharing one growing kit. thanks for the consideration!
