Cattail: From Plant to Basket

In our first class meeting, we will spend time getting to know the cattail plant. We will discuss honorable harvest practices, exploring how to gather, and the many uses and versatility of cattail. We will also cover how to properly dry and store cattail leaves so they remain strong, flexible, and ready for weaving.

In the second class, students will bring their own previously harvested materials and begin weaving. Each person will learn the foundational techniques needed to create a simple cattail basket.

By the end of the course, students will leave with a handmade basket and the skills needed to continue their weaving journey on their own.

Registration Includes

Instruction and materials are included. You will leave with a basket, harvested cattail weavers, and knowledge to create it all over again yourself.

What goes into our class pricing? As a local nonprofit, Duluth Folk School is committed to supporting both our instructors and community. We want to compensate our instructors fairly, keep class sizes small, and keep our doors open—while also keeping prices as low as we can.

Student Requirements

• Skill Level/Prerequisite Skills: No prior experience needed, you will need hand dexterity/fine motor ability, we will be outdoors on uneven swampy terrain
• Best for Ages: 18 and older
• You should bring:
  • 1st class: Something to bring your cattail home in – its a tall plant so 5 gallon buckets can sometimes work but if you have something taller even better. I also tie them together in strings.
  • 2nd class: Your own cattail rehydrated in a large towel to keep it damp!
    Scissors, clips (binder, clothespins, quilt – etc small to hold cattail)
    Some tools some like but are not necessary: pliers ( smaller tips), awls or other small pointed tool, spoke weights

Location

Day 1: Class will meet at the Waabizheshikana Trail (Marten Trail)

Day 2 will take place at Duluth Folk School in the Main Hall. The Main Hall is located on street level and is handicapped accessible.
