Building a Canoe, Day 5

Today is the end of our first week of building a canoe!

We finally turned the canoe over, we steamed the secondary ribs, and fitted all the secondary ribs into place. We’ve already lashed 99 joints, and we have another 88 or so to go. The guidance we’ve received from Dennis, from Urban Boatbuilders, has been invaluable. His clear explanations and calm demeanor have made the progress we’ve made so far easy and fun!

Steve from WDSE TV was here today, filming, and we look forward to seeing how the footage all turns out!

Looking ahead to next week, we’ll be laying out the fabric over the body of the canoe, sewing up the ends of the fabric, oiling all the bare wood, and varnishing the fabric. There will still be lots of little touch-up details to come in the next week, but we’re making great progress, and we should be able to finish the canoe right on time.

Here are a few photos from today…
