Shape Note Singing

dsc_0068Shape note music is authentic American Roots music with its origins in New England in the mid-1700s. It’s called “shape note” because the note heads are different shapes, an innovation intended to help unschooled singers read the music more easily.

This style of singing has a very distinctive old-timey sound, with four-part harmonies, strong rhythms, and full voices.

This class will provide a brief historical look at shape note singing, and will teach you how to read shape note music, “sing the shapes” (fa, sol, la, etc.), beat time, and sing in a group. If you find that you love this music, you can join the Duluth Singing of The Sacred Harp for regular monthly singings!
