Mary Reichert

Mary’s grandmother loved all things weaving. In an effort to keep the thread going she began to learn in her early twenties but found herself distracted by the beauty of Central Asian felt rugs and clothing. This woke up a curiosity to learn both the art and culture surrounding felt and she soon found herself living in Kyrgyzstan for three months with a family of felt-makers. She has since been back twice, most recently to learn the art of making Shyrdak.

She is especially interested in creating felt that invokes a similar spirit of beauty and wonder as that which first inspired her. Having grown up without ever learning to create with her hands, she is dedicated to teaching others to wake up this capacity. Mary works from her home studio in Grand Marais, MN.
