Duluth Folk School instructor Anna Swarts

Anna Swarts

After growing up in Red Wing and living in various places around Minnesota, I discovered Duluth, a place that combines many of my favorite things: a spectacular water view, trails and the BWCA out my doorstep, and a friendly and lively community of fellow adventurers. I moved here in 2017 and have since fallen in love with the Lake, the surrounding hills, and the community.

My love of the Superior Hiking Trail started with my first backpacking visit, approximately 15 years ago. Rain, bugs, blisters, and bruised hips didn’t dissuade me, as a few years later I did my first solo trip. Making mistakes and learning from them gave me the tools and confidence to complete a solo total thru hike of the trail in 2013. The skills I’ve gained on the SHT have translated to other adventures out of state and abroad. Since my thru hike, I have continued to enjoy the SHT through hiking, backpacking, and trail running. I have worked on a variety of projects as a volunteer for the Superior Hiking Trail Association, including trail work, educational outreach, guiding hikes, and digging latrines. My goal is to help others enjoy and protect this fantastic resource in our backyard.
