If you’ve always wanted to learn to safely and effectively kayak from a professional kayak instructor, this is your chance!
Join highly trained instructor Jen Buseman as she helps you progress from novice to being ready to go out on your own. You will learn about the gear used in sea kayaking, what kind/size of boat is best for you, and what to wear.
You will hit the water and learn how to get into your boat, what to do if you capsize, how to safely get back into your boat if you do capsize, and how to help someone else back into their boat. We will learn the basic paddle stokes, and move up to learning some more advanced paddle strokes, such as draw strokes and bracing. We’ll put it all into practice by going for a paddle on Lake Superior (weather permitting, of course)!
This class consists of three 3-hour sessions. By the end of the three sessions you will have the basic skills needed to kayak confidently and safely – and you will also have met your new kayaking buddies! 🙂
Professional kayak instruction in a positive, low-pressure environment with very small class size.
No prior experienced required, but you should be comfortable in the water.
Best for Ages…
18 years or older.
You should bring…
Towel, swimsuit, hat, nose plugs (optional), and dry, warm clothes (for after). You are encouraged to bring your own kayak and/or kayaking equipment if they have it. The ideal gear list includes:
- Sea kayak (sit-inside, spray-skirt compatible)
- Spray skirt
- Neoprene gloves and/or booties
- Nose plug
If you don’t have any of this equipment, we have a partnership with Day Tripper of Duluth to rent gear for this class. Choose that registration option and all gear will be waiting for you when you arrive (we’ll be in touch beforehand to verify sizing). To rent individual items, or if you have questions, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
