DSC_2017Description

You will be in a workshop setting similar to what you might find at an old-time music festival. Our goal is to inspire you to get out to a few festivals and start playing with others!

Old-Time music is the genre name given by early recordings companies to the early string band music in North America, which was heavily recorded during the 1920s and 30s. These early recordings offer a window into a time before the homogenized and commercial world, which it ironically helped to create. The early developments of this music are in some ways vague and mysterious, but the tunes and traditions are still going strong almost one hundred years since its fifteen seconds of recorded fame. You’ll find people playing old-time music in every corner of the country, and it has kept up quite a community of gatherings and festivals. These events offer workshops, performances, and ample opportunity for tunes!

This workshop will be focused on the five string banjo and its role in this music. We will learn basic old-time banjo picking techniques, tunings, tunes, and also listen to some great recordings! Learning the tunes will require no need for reading music, and will be taught through call and response and learned by ear. Learn to finger a few easy chords on a banjo and play a song, along with a group.

Are you going to be doing this workshop again???
I can only make Tues and Thursday, this week (would you be willing to give me a discount price?) I play guitar now. If you are doing this in the Fall, let me know too.

Hi Alyssa. Sorry that we can’t do a discount (each day will build on the previous day), but we’ve had a lot of positive response, so hopefully we will do another class later in the year!
