In this class, you will be introduced to timber framing techniques while you build a sturdy white pine sawhorse.

This type of timber framing comes from the German tradition, where a full scale layout is drawn up, which serves to mark timbers for compound angles. The beauty is that all the measurements are very simple and the angles are derived without calculation.

During the instructor’s apprenticeship, years ago, this particular sawhorse was one of the first assemblies each apprentice put together.  It is an essential introduction to a method with which very complex structures can be built.

You will learn to use a story pole, hand saws and power saws, mallet and chisel, and a few geometry tricks. In the end, you will go home with a sawhorse that will carry almost any load you can put on its back! A paper version and description of the process will allow you to reproduce the layout at home and create as many horses as you need!
