See-Saw and That’s Not All: Old Time Fiddle Bowing

  • August 3, 2019
    1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Before the Betse & Clarke concert later this same day, Betse Ellis will be offering a fiddle master class!

Great fiddlers develop an inherent understanding of how to utilize their bow. Legendary old time fiddlers and their recordings exhibit extraordinary bowing styles, and we gain much from studying how these fiddlers made the sounds they produced. Magnifying the tiny aspects of a larger picture brings illumination to the whole. Learn how to recognize the sound of iconic bowing elements, and even better, how to make it intrinsic to your style!

  • Iconic bowing elements
  • Three-dimensional bowing
  • Tone production

  • Communicating with the bow
