Rosemaling: Raudsaumsmaling Style

Rosemaling is a folk painting in Norway. Rosemaling means flower painting in Norwegian. Raudsaumsmaling is a style of rosemaling from the eastern Telemark area of Norway. It is based on the regional bunad (or costume) of the area.
In this class we will learn more about the origins of rosemaling and Raudsaumsmaling. Then, we’ll use oil paints to practice the basic brush strokes needed to paint in this style. After some practice, we will complete a candle plate of own to take home.
We will take a midday break for lunch. You are welcome to bring a bag lunch, or enjoy some of the delicious food and drinks from the Dovetail Cafe!
Registration Includes
Instruction and all required materials. By the end of class, you will go home with knowledge of Rosemaling history, new painting techniques, and an understanding of what comprises the characteristic Raudsaumsmaling style. You will also go home with a candle plate, painted in the Raudsaumsmaling style of Rosemaling.
You should bring…
The instructor will supply everything needed. Wear old clothes, it can get a bit messy! If you have your own paint brushes feel free to bring them.
Skill Level
This class is appropriate for beginners, but if you already have some experience (either painting with oils or acrylics, and/or some experience rosemaling), you’ll be able to do some advanced work.
