Quiltmaking for Beginners: Disappearing Nine-Patch Meets Flying Geese

Using cotton fabric scraps and repurposing slightly used cotton fabrics, you will first create simple Nine-patch quilt blocks. Then, you will cut them up and turn them into Flying Geese blocks to make a small quilt, a table runner, or even a pillow. This technique is easy and fun, with lots of design possibilities. Plus, repurposing fabrics is always a great idea!

Registration Includes…

Students will go home with an understanding of basic traditional quiltmaking techniques, having created an interesting design and used scraps and/or repurposed cotton fabrics in their project.

What goes into our class pricing? As a local nonprofit, Duluth Folk School is committed to supporting both our instructors and community. We want to compensate our instructors fairly, keep class sizes small, and keep our doors open—while also keeping prices as low as we can.

Student Requirements

• Skill Level/Prerequisite Skills: A foundational understanding or some prior experience with quilting and/or sewing will be very helpful. Knowing how to thread and operate a sewing machine is required – straight stitching only. This class will move at a relatively fast pace, but adventurous and curious beginners are welcome!
• Best for Ages: 18 and older
• You should bring:
  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • A new 80/12 topstitch needle
  • 50 wt. cotton or cotton/poly thread
  • 1/4″ foot attachment for machine
  • 45mm rotary cutter with a new blade
  • 18 x 24 cutting mat
  • 6 x 24 rotary cutting ruler
  • fabric scissors
  • thread snips
  • seam ripper
  • fine pins
  • white chalk marking pencil
  • a variety of dark, medium, and light-colored fabrics to construct two Nine-patch blocks using 5″ squares
  • Note: The instructor will also bring fabrics for students’ use, as well as irons and ironing boards.

(NOTE: Please know how to use your sewing machine – the instructor will not teach you how to use it or how to fix it.)
