Do you have stained or ripped t-shirts? Or other clothing that holds sentimental value? Rather than adding to the 11 million tons of material sent to landfills, learn how to repurpose those items into something useful. Use mindful techniques to create t-shirt yarn and crochet reusable projects.

You will be cutting t-shirts (or your materials) into strips that will be stretched and rolled into chunks of yarn. Then, you will crochet the yarn into a basket, tote bag, hot pad, or other project.

Registration Includes

Students will learn to make t-shirt yarn and will go home with several pieces of t-shirt yarn and the beginning of a basket or tote.

What goes into our class pricing? As a local nonprofit, Duluth Folk School is committed to supporting both our instructors and community. We want to compensate our instructors fairly, keep class sizes small, and keep our doors open—while also keeping prices as low as we can.

Thank you for participating in our local handcraft and education economy! Together, we help keep Duluth a fun and vibrant place.

Student Requirements

  • Skill Level/Prerequisite Skills: Students should be able to cut in straight lines. Knowing how to single crochet would be helpful but not required.
  • Best for Ages: 18 and older
  • You should bring: Bring a very sharp pair of scissors to cut material and a large crochet hook (N is best, but K-N would be acceptable). T-shirts in a variety of colors will be freely available or you can bring your own items to repurpose. Smocks or aprons are optional to avoid fabric pills on your clothing.
