This free handcrafting experience is a part of our Youth Canoe Building program and is intended to provide under-served and under-represented youth in our area the opportunity to gain woodworking experience and life skills as they work to make a canoe paddle that can connect them to outdoor spaces!
In this program, you’ll make your own straight-shaft canoe paddle using basswood. We’ll go through all of the steps of making your paddle, from gluing the blade and the grip onto a prepared shaft, and then working to shape your paddle, using both hand and power tools. You’ll learn characteristics of various types of paddles, materials, and how to size a paddle to an individual person. After participating in this program, you’ll also be invited to put your new paddle to use in our youth-built canoes this summer! Snacks will be provided!
*If you’re not able to attend all of the sessions but would still like to try paddle making, you can work on paddles that will be used with the youth-built canoes! Contact Erika to let her know which days you’ll be attending.
Registration Includes
