In this class, you will learn how to cut and rip fabric into strips, braid it, and lace the braid together into a cushy rug!

It works best to have woven fabric of natural fiber (cotton or wool), that is all of a similar weight. If you use artificial fibers or knitted material, it will not rip, so the process of making strips of fabric will take considerably longer. The instructor will have some material on hand, but as it takes quite a bit to make a rug, you will want to have your own. The instructor learned this technique from her grandma, who used old woolen clothes (blankets are a lot easier!).

You will start the braiding and lacing process, with time to practice tension on a partially completed rug, but will not be finishing the rug during class. The instructor will demonstrate how to finish, she will give tips and hints on how to make your rug lie flat, and she’ll describe how to care for and clean your completed rug.

  1. I assume we will get an email closer to the class time, but can I ask if we are to bring our own fabrics to class – I know you say you will have some, then says it takes a lot and we will want our own there, but then in the class description says just bring ourselves. And if we bring our own, what kind of fabric – sheets? or should we just get/use cotton based fabric. Thanks!

    • Hi Mary.

Yes, we’ll send out an email before class, but I checked with the instructor, and she said a full grocery bag’s worth should be enough. I hope this helps!

  2. Could I automatically be put on the next rug class that is offered?? even if its months from now!!?

  3. Can you ask the instructor this. There’s a person selling 2″ strips -she is getting out of making rag rugs. Looked like denim and other material. Are our strips going to be 2″ wide? I thought I’d buy some of her strips if it’s the right size.

    • Mary – here’s the response from the instructor:
“2” is smaller than I usually use, but will work just fine– her braid will just be narrower than mine. Good find!”
